Cancer Poem #1

I wrote this poem the weekend I spent with my sister, waiting for her results to come back.

We smiled and laughed

and tried to pretend

but the fear was there

I saw it in your eyes

And it was in mine

From house to house

down the street

We walked as a family

Looking at the merchandise

On display for sale

If we did not speak

of the real reason

that we were there that weekend

If we believed that we were there

on a holiday

Maybe it would be true

Maybe the phone would

Never ring

and maybe you would

never hear

The doctor say yes,

 it’s cancer
