Cancer Poem #3

The Quiet Room

Waiting in the quiet room

the lights are turned down low

no one says a word

and we dare not let our eyes meet

there in the quiet room

A father, a sister, a son

All deep in their own nightmare

all wanting to wake up

beg this nightmare end

there in the quiet room

Magazines lie on the coffee table

fingers flip form page to page

how to lose weight in a week

it’s a joke, we dare not speak

there in the quiet room

To be or not to be

is there life from this day on

the minutes tick by so slowly

we watch the door, try to breathe

there in the quiet room

At last a shadow emerges

tall and dressed in green

our hearts are in our throats

as we stand to meet our fate

there in the quiet room
