Ryan’s Page

Ryan and Kokum

Ryan was born on February 13th, 1985.  He died by cocaine overdose/suicide on September 21st, 2006 at the age of 21.  During his short life, Ryan accomplished a lot.  He was always learning something new or trying new things.  He learned how to yo-yo, skateboard, ride a bicycle, swim, make a sling shot, sew, bead, set a rabbit snare, clean a fish, hunt, ski-doo, and set a tent all at a young age.

Ryan loved being in the outdoors and helped my dad on his trap line every weekend.  He loved to go moose hunting and partridge hunting too as well as fishing and camping and of course canoeing.  Ryan spent the last year of his life building his cedar canoe.

Ryan taught himself to play the keyboard, the harmonica and the electric guitar.  He was in the band at High School and played the saxophone but that wasn’t his first love.  He loved Ozzie Osborne and Black Sabbath.  He was always too self-conscious and unsure of himself to play for people so we just heard him in his bedroom, but he did get together with other musicians at times just for fun to play.

Ryan was a very caring and generous person who would always help his friends and family.  He was always there when I needed him.  He was just too trusting of people and unfortunately he trusted people who took advantage of his generosity and naivety.

I have learned so much from Ryan and am so happy that he has been in my life.

  1. I’m very sorry to read about your loss, Kathy! A good friend of mine is also struggling with addiction and suicidal thoughts, it’s heartbreaking but having lost someone to them, I can’t even imagine the pain!
I’m looking forward to joining the readers of your blog and hope there’re going to be more things we discover we share.

  2. Thank you for stopping by my blog. I am so sorry for your loss. There are no words to describe something like this. May God comfort you always, and best wishes on your writing journey.

  3. Stumbled upon your WordPress because you liked a recent post of mine on http://www.muni.com.ph! Perused your site a little and sorry to hear about your son Ryan, but I am glad for what he has brought in your life. 🙂 Incidentally, he and would have been exactly the same age if he were still around. I too was born on February 13, 1985. 🙂

  4. My youngest child and only son is now 21, and a lot of what you say about Ryan is true for my son as well. It seems like Joel lives on the edge at times, and I worry about some of his “friends.” When Joel was younger I had a recurring dream about him falling off of a building. Strange.
I don’t know how I would handle it if something happened to Joel–I know I would probably not take it well, but I have been fortunate that I have not had to go through what you have.
It’s so very important that you have shared your experience with others. You have a fantastic and inspirational blog!
